If you find your mind wandering in prayer.. if you realize you’re thinking about that upcoming class, that person you’re trying to marry, your kids, the meeting you have to prepare for, all the errands you gotta run, the interview you didn’t get, the midterm you’ve stayed up all night for or the fact that your life just sucks, consider practicing this instead:
If you were speaking to someone you were crazy about, you couldn’t stop dreaming about, someone who you would never look away from when you were speaking to them and whose every words you would drink up blissfully like hot chocolate on a rainy day, wouldn’t you be enjoying your conversation? Wouldn’t it like…”taste” good to be talking to that special one? If you were head over heels in love..who cares about what else is happening! Your heart and mind are wrapped around your beloved’s awesomeness.
So imagine when praying, you’re speaking to your Beloved- every emotion of love, hope, awe, of appreciation, dedication, of “I’ll do anything to be with you” realization just comes out, pouring out with every letter of the Qur’an you recite, with every praise of God that drops out of your lips.
And while doing that, imagine that right behind you is the Angel of Death, just waiting to take your soul the very moment you say your final salaam. No time for meetings. No time for exams. No one to call up. No time to feel sorry for yourself. The moment you finish, your time in this world is up. The last thing and only thing you have left to do is this specific prayer, this moment you’re in right now.
Combine those two realizations. Where is your focus now?"
